The Magic of Gardening

Report: The Magic of Gardening with Kari Beardsell

Main Hall: This month we take a look at The Magic of Gardening run by Kari Beardsell on Tuesdays 11.00 to 13.00 and Sundays 18.00 to 20.00.

The Magic of Gardening is designed to inform, inspire and empower you to achieve your gardening goals..

The course is unique in that it is designed to be practical, as it is important that everything learnt is useful and can be easily applied. Over the course of eight weeks, students acquire a wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge providing the confidence to enjoy and explore their own garden in a way that works for them.

The course begins with the fundamentals of gardening and progresses onto specifically selected content from the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture. Prior experience in gardening is not required as the course enables students to understand what is happening in their garden and to work effectively within the space. Those with practical experience will learn the theory behind their previous explorations and are likely to have many ‘aha!’ moments of realisation and smiles of understanding.

Alongside the theory, the course demonstrates how this information can be used in a real-life setting. In each session a table of various plants for identification is provided and physical examples of the concepts introduced. In addition to this, horticultural best practice is discussed, along with stories of successes and failures in order to better understand how everything learnt within the classroom comes to life in the garden.

Kari has a Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture at Birmingham City University and has created two gardens for Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, a rainbow show garden called the Benecol’s Prism Corner Garden in 2008, and a feature garden called The Night Garden in 2011. She also won a national design competition which was held by Jackson Fencing in 2012.

Kari runs a successful garden design business, Blue Bridge Garden Design.
